Three generations and counting: If there's such a thing as Pine Island's royal family of seafood, the Barnhill clan can stake its claim to the throne.
Family members carved out a living on local waters since the 1950s, when Alfred Barnhill convinced his young bride Bobbie to take up residence in his "camp," a wooden stilt house just feet above Pine Island Sound. From there Alfred chased mullet, crab, king fish, mackerel, pompano and more, and launched a commercial fishing legacy that thrives today.
Alfred's granddaughter Carrie Barnhill Grainger continues the family's proud tradition as owner of Barnhill Seafood Market & More, 4573 Pine Island Road, in the heart of Matlacha. Her retail market specializes in fresh seafood, much of it plucked from the waters around Pine Island.
Fresh local offerings include stone crab claws, live blue crab, mullet, oysters and clams, as well as Gulf shrimp and an array of fresh Gulf and Atlantic fish.
"Seafood is all I've really known," Barnhill Grainger said. "It's what I'm comfortable with."
Other treats include grab-and-go boiled shrimp, smoked mullet and mullet dip, hot seafood chowder and a customer favorite, Karen's Key Lime Pie, a decadent, must-have island treat handcrafted by Carrie's mother.
Barnhill Seafood Market & More occupies a decades-old fish house coated in "Barnhill Green" - the same color Alfred and Carrie's father Eddie Sr. painted the mullet skiffs they built years ago, some of which still ply local waters. The building served as a wholesale seafood hub for years, but now strictly caters to retail customers.
The eye-catching Barnhill Green fits Matlacha's funky pastel palate, and local artist Mel Meo's sprawling water-themed murals adorn a large outdoor cooler.
Barnhill Seafood Market & More is open Tuesday to Saturday 9:00a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday's 11 am to 4 pm. Summer hours may vary. For information, call (239) 283-3000, or go online to Facebook.com/barnhillsretail.
